Altitude Changes the Roof. Most Specs Don't Account for It.

Colorado is the only state we work in where elevation itself is a design condition, and it compounds everything else.


UV exposure is materially higher. A thinner atmosphere means more ultraviolet radiation reaches the membrane, and UV degrades single-ply and coatings over time. A membrane that reaches its expected service life at sea level ages faster at five thousand feet and faster still in the mountains. That shifts the spec toward higher-performing formulations and shortens the maintenance interval on any coated system.


Daily thermal cycling is extreme. Low humidity and high solar gain produce daily temperature swings far wider than most of the country sees, and the assembly expands and contracts through that range every day. Seams, laps, terminations, and metalwork take that movement, and expansion joint detailing matters more here than in a stable climate.


Hail is the most severe in the country. The Front Range corridor from Fort Collins through Denver to Pueblo produces the highest hail losses in the United States. Impact resistance comes from membrane thickness, from what's underneath — a hard cover board versus soft insulation behaves completely differently under the same stone — and from attachment. On a roof that will take multiple events in twenty years, the better assembly pays for itself on the first one.


Snow load is structural, and mountain load is a different order. Front Range ground snow loads are meaningful; mountain communities carry some of the highest in the country, with drift accumulation at parapets and roof-level changes concentrating weight far above the field average. Any rre-roofthat adds weight or changes drainage is a structural question answered before the spec is written.



We specify elevation and exposure. A Denver building and a Vail building are not the same problem.

What We Do In Colorado

Commercial roofing. 60-mil TPO, PVC, EPDM, modified bitumen, and standing-seam metal systems installed to manufacturer specifications on buildings that remain open during the work.


Design-build reroof. Assessment, drawings, submittals, and installation under one contract. No consultant fee stacked on top of the install, and one warranty covering the full assembly instead of a finger-pointing match between the designer and the installer when something leaks.


Architectural sheet metal. Copings, fascia, edge metal, and through-wall flashings fabricated in-house to ES-1 wind uplift standards. Edge metal is where most North Texas roofs fail first — and in a corridor that takes hail nearly every spring, that detail is the difference between a repair and a claim.


Waterproofing and restoration. Water doesn't only come through the roof. Tilt-wall joints, window perimeters, plaza decks, parking structures, below-grade walls — the other half of the envelope.

No commercial roof is completely hail-proof, but the assembly can be designed for greater impact resistance. Membrane thickness, a high-density cover board, insulation type, fastening pattern, and the condition of the underlying deck all influence performance. AVID evaluates the building’s exposure and recommends an assembly designed to reduce hail damage while meeting the project’s budget and warranty requirements.
